With the NBA Draft about to commence, the headline for Thursday night is rather other basketball news. Prior to the draft, breaking news via ESPN, reported a blockbuster trade in progress with the Washington Wizards and the Los Angeles Lakers – Russell Westbrook to LA, for Lakers’ Kyle Kuzma and others, and a first round draft pick.
Westbrook is about to be reunited with his hometown in LA, and without question seems like a great fit for not only him, but also the Lakers on and off the court.
Aside from his incredible 2012 NBA Finals run with the Oklahoma City Thunder, alongside now superstars, Kevin Durant and James Harden, Westbrook has had years of playoff woes. Being traded to the Wizards, a team lacking true playoff potential, Westbrook can finally seek championship motivation in LA.
LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and now Russell Westbrook, will be the ‘Big 3’ in the western conference.
It will be interesting to see how the these three superstars mesh together, and of course will take some time. Fans I’m sure are already looking forward to the other Big 3 matchup in the eastern conference, the Brooklyn Nets.
Westbrook might face his former teammates, Harden and Durant, if they both make it to the NBA Finals…which might be the story of the 2021-2022 season.
While ESPN stated more news about the trade, and made it official: Westbrook is now a Laker. Wizards will receive Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell, and a No.22 pick, according to The Athletic.
This trade makes for a semi, deep bench for Beal in Washington, but one has to think if he will really ever have a real shot to win an NBA title with the Wizards. Questions will definitely loom for Beal later on his future in D.C., but for the Lakers, the sky is the limit the next season.
I think it’s too early to give a prediction on the Lakers’ title chances as of right now, but I’m definitely excited to see Westbrook play along with LeBron and Anthony Davis. Can you say Hollywood showtime baby?!
